Galvannealed Steel

Galvannealed steel is available in a wide range of carbon and manganese contents and can be either plain or bright annealed, depending on its intended use. It has superior corrosion resistance and is primarily used as an automobile body panel. Galvannealed steel can also be used in electrical equipment applications where good electrical contact and corrosion resistance are required.
This alloy is very hard and protects the steel against corrosion. Galvannealed steel can be used for any application where a high level of corrosion resistance is required, e.g. it is particularly suitable for the construction of pipelines, tanks, etc. The coating is normally removed after the initial exposure to ambient conditions to obtain the properties of bare steel. For this purpose, the hot dip zinc coating is usually first dissolved in a bath containing sulphuric acid or hydrochloric acid and then stripped off with hot water.
Positively charged ions of hydrogen are liberated which act to strip away the zinc coating. Galvanized steel is coated with zinc on both sides by a continuous hot-dip process. In-line heat treatment transforms the molten zinc coating into a zinc-iron alloy as soon as the strip exits the coating bath.

By comparison with ordinary cold rolled steel, galvannealed steel is harder and has improved corrosion properties. Galvannealed steel is manufactured by the hot-dip galvanization process from high-grade, low-alloy steels.

The zinc coating is usually applied in two steps: first, a continuous hot-dip process to produce a zinc coating on one side, followed by a second hot-dip process to provide a zinc coating on both sides.
The galvannealed coating is protected by an oxidation layer of zinc that is formed on the surface as soon as the metal comes into contact with air. The protective layer prevents the surface of the steel from becoming rusty. The surface of the steel is covered with an adherent, thin layer of iron oxide (rust), which acts as an electrode to collect electrochemical charges generated during use of the metal.
Galvannealing also causes an increase in strength, hardness and wear resistance of the steel.
